Before Retirement (Tier I and Tier II)

In Line of Duty

If a member dies before retirement from an injury that occurred in the line of duty, the surviving spouse will receive a monthly pension of 75% of the member's accrued pension projected to the normal retirement date.

Not in Line of Duty

If the death is not in the line of duty, but occurs AFTER the member is vested, the surviving spouse will receive a monthly pension of 75% of the accrued unreduced pension based on actual years of credited service.

If the death is not in the line of duty and occurs BEFORE the member is vested, the surviving spouse, or if none the named beneficiaries, will receive a refund of the member's contributions plus interest.

After Retirement

Tier I

If a member dies after retiring, provided the member and the surviving spouse had been married for at least one year prior to member's retirement date, the surviving spouse will receive a monthly pension of 75% of the member's current pension.

The surviving spouse may also be entitled to a $5,000 Death Benefit. If there is no surviving spouse, the person on the beneficiary election form or estate may receive the $5,000 Death Benefit. Please contact the Fund at 817-632-8900.

Tier II

If a member dies after retiring and the member elected a designated beneficiary reducing his or her pension at the time of retirement, that designated beneficiary will receive a monthly pension of specified percentage of the member's current pension.

The surviving spouse may also be entitled to a $5,000 Death Benefit. If there is no surviving spouse, the person on the beneficiary election form or estate may receive the $5,000 Death Benefit. Please contact the Fund at 817-632-8900.
